Blogging with Children

Posted by Adrian on Nov-28-06
I’ve just started my seven year old son off with his own blog http://code-samuel.blogspot.com . I’m not sure where it is going to lead to but he is very happy to be getting hits to his page (we put a free Sitemeter counter on yesterday) and comments from his friends and family. A few days ago he managed to present his blog to his class and needless to say, he was chuffed. Mind you, it is still an effort to get him to sit and blog as he wants to be a soccer or cricket star this week :)

Today he has written a draft about a piece of chess software that we just bought. That review should be finished in the morning once he has his shoes and socks on and is ready for school. He loves the Chessmaster because it plays better than his dad hehehe. He has also reviewed a piece of free Math software that he likes called Timez Attack and would be useful to many of my readers as well as Age of Empires II. You can also see what he thought of his first Blues Festival and see why he will tell his friends about it for years to come.

cheers

Adrian

  1. Denise Said,

    Hello Adrian,
I would like to say thank you to you and your son Samuel for inspiring my son to choose blogging as his hobby and helping him increase his reading and writing skills. I stumbled onto this blog in June 2007 and quickly read about all the different online tools available for students. I even read this post about kids blogging and lumped it into the section of my brain marked “I’ve already read stuff like that”. It was not until yesterday that this information moved to the “Great idea” section of my brain while I was setting up a blog as part of a staff development project for work and added this site to my Blogroll.

My 9 year old son has been on a quest for a hobby since the beginning of the school year. He does a lot of stuff (basketball, playing the violin, gamecube…) but I guess he didn’t think they were hobbies. Everyone in our family has been helping him on his quest by making suggestions, taking him to the bookstore for ideas and even viewing YouTube videos (my 16 year old son’s contribution).

While I was viewing your blogroll, my son saw Samuel’s blog. Wow, was the sound I heard from my son. He immediately wanted to read the blog description and was amazed that a 7 year old was blogging. Prior to that moment he didn’t really know what a blog was, all he kept saying was, “That’s a cool website, can I do that?” He enjoyed reading many of Samuel’s stories and decided he would blog for his hobby. While I setup his blog (http://blogbending.blogspot.com), he decided the title, theme and topics he wanted to cover.

    Thanks again,
    Denise
