Getting Ready for the First Day of School

Posted by Adrian on Aug-4-08
Self esteem poetryIn the last couple of days a lot of the messages I’ve received relate to getting ready to go back to school in the US.

So in response here is an activity that I find works well in the first couple of days to get to know a bit more about the kids. NB I also do a ‘teacher version’ so they get to know just a little about me. I also find it helps the parents know which presents to buy at the end of the year. hehehehe

NB The second line is an anagram of my name from this anagram generator

BIG HINT – do this yourself without kids – I once had a child come out as ‘Romance Gel’ :)

  1. Jaymie Said,

Every year I have students create “me bags”. They don’t necessarily have to be bags. The idea is to have students find a “container” at home and fill it with items that will tell their classmates about them. One student was a drummer, so he put his items in a snare drum. One girl used a shoe box and decorated it too. I included an ice cream scoop in mine because I love ice cream. Some include pictures, souvenires, or even books. It’s all about personal preference. I like the idea of a personal poem. Anything to get kids writing and having fun doing it! It would also be a great bulletin board idea.

Another project we do to start the year is make a classroom puzzle. I give each student a sturdy cardboard puzzle piece and then they decorate them for our bulletin board which read “we all fit in”. The students love displaying their pieces in the hallway.

PS I am very new to blogging so I hope these ideas are helpful. Good luck to everyone! :)
