At some point in history each of these buildings have claimed the title of ‘World’s Tallest Building’. This code breaking activity has the students work out a few interesting facts about these buildings by deciphering roman numerals.

Just finished off a page on the roman numerals site that outlines some of the statistics of the Collosseum. Wow!!!

eg Roman records show that during one particular festival, held in CCXL CE, a staggering: MM gladiators; LXX lions; XL wild horses; XXX elephants; XXX leopards; XX wild asses; XIX giraffes; X elks; X hyenas; X tigers; I hippopotamus & I rhinoceros were killed.

The idea of the site is to make pretty dull topic a little more engaging

I really am making progress in creating my Roman Numerals site. I’m finding that I’m increasingly happy with how the graphics are progressing as I experiment more with the software.

Tonight I’ve completed the XVIth page

I’m thinking that when I get to the XXXth page I’ll go live.

Roman Numerals – Webquest? Scavenger Hunt?

At the moment I’m spending a bit of time each day trying to build a website to make the learning of Roman Numerals just a little more interesting than a worksheet. My plan is to include colourful illustrations, interesting facts about the number system and real world places the system is used. I also plan to include a little humour e.g.

Q – How do you cut an empire in half?
A – With a pair of caesars

The site currently has content relating to: origins of the number system, use in copyright, naming kings, milestones, clocks, gladiators, famous battles, why on buildings, why we learn about them & the founding of Rome. I’m thinking of throwing some destruction in e.g. Pompii & the Fire of Rome to keep the punters interested.

As of today I’ve planned about XX pages & have illustrated VII If you have any tried and true lessons or roman jokes that might make this concept a little more interesting, feel free to email them to me. I’m hoping to have the site ready by the end of November.

Tonight I’ve added a roman numerals poster to my Math website as my son currently wants to explore them.

I’ve also added a few activities that point out the real world applications of roman numerals.
