‘Work smarter, not harder’. This is a catch cry of school executive all over the world. It is something management espouse, along with ‘family friendly workplaces’, whilst handing you several more deadlines A while back a friend and I were having several drinks at a pub and tried to nut out a few strategies to do something other than pay lip service to this empty catch phrase.
One of the things we came up with was to get the student body working as a ‘Learning Community’ to discover quality learning resources. What we figured is that to have 30 students spending 30 minutes on a task could potentially save you 15 hours of work. Then, with a little reflection on the part of the classroom teacher, you would have new skills to add to your Teacher Toolbox and the children would have participated in a very powerful learning experience.
Check out how I use this strategy when exploring problem solving.
cheers
